Glam rock pop sex dance - "Whole New Way" Scissor Sisters

"Whole New Way" Scissor Sisters

Now THIS song is fun. Hot off the presses from the new Scissor Sisters' album, Night Work. This song makes me want to cover myself in glittery body paint, stand on a table, and grind on drag queens.

How you'll move: Freaky gyrations and lots of finger pointing in sync with "... to love YOU..."

When to play it: Any non-family party ("... might sneak up from behind, it's gonna blow your mind..." might be too much for Grandma); dancing in your mirror in your underwear while singing into a cheap hairbrush.

Side note: My favorite Scissor Sisters song is "Lovers in the Backseat" - don't mind the dumb video; just listen!

Satisfying noise, synth and bass: "The Royal We" Silversun Pickups

"The Royal We" Silversun Pickups

This song is fun, rock, and satisfying. There is soft man whispering, constipated yelling, enjoyable tempo changes, a thumping bass, and some really fun synthesizer sounds.

This pick is inspired by the band's live show that I saw LAST NIGHT actually. A friend invited me; I expected very little and got a lot! It was a highly entertaining, energetic, full sounding show - thrashing, girly singing, female bass-playing; each song warranted my foot tapping and head bobbing.

When you'll play it: Running; sunny car ride sing-a-long; chillaxin' on your couch blogging?

How you'll feel: Pretty satisfied and rock-enriched.

Side note: I highly recommend their latest album, Swoon, and the songs "Sort Of" and "Substitution."

Throaty black dance metal - "Mother" Danzig

"Mother" Danzig

So I spent an hour trying to figure out the name of this song, after hearing it in a bar last night. However, I was confusing "mother" with "woman," so it took me longer than usual. DUH, it's "Mother" by Danzig! This song effin' rocks, and it makes you rock when you hear it. That's it. The song and video are self-explanatory: amazing black rock danceness.

How you'll move: Angry-faced head banging; foot tapping; hand drumming.

When to play it: When you're in a good mood; local air guitar contest; late nite house party (if there's room to head bang).

Side note: This video is nuts!

Indie folk rock love nourishment - "Ode to LRC" Band of Horses

"Ode to LRC" Band of Horses

So I saw Band of Horses live in Williamsburg yesterday. The sun was setting on the river, Manhattan skyline view, sea of warm bodies, and one of my most favorite bands; it couldn't have been any better. I can play all of their albums beginning to end without a moment of emptiness or jamming lull. They are a full-sounding feel-good American granola band minus any cliche twang (no cheating wife tractor shit).

I was going to post a new song, but I want to share a fun memorable song from last night. You cannot go wrong with a crowd of hipsters and mountain-dwelling frontmen singing "... the world is such a wonderful place."

How you'll feel: Like the Lord is singing to you, instructing you to fill up like a hot air balloon and float off toward the moon.

How you'll move: Shut-eyed head rolling and foot tapping.

When to play it: Anytime. No, really, play it right now.

Side note: Download Infinite Arms on iTunes now. Or listen to it streaming online. FYI, this song makes my top 100 favorite songs of all time list: "Detlef Schrempf,"

NEW MOON soundtrack flashback! Angelic terror tune - "Roslyn" Bon Iver & St. Vincent

"Roslyn" Bon Iver & St. Vincent

It's my blog, and I'll cry if I want to.

So I skipped back to the New Moon soundtrack in celebration of the Eclipse one. Shoot me. This song makes me feel calm and other worldly. This song is the giant hug of sadness wrapped around your mind. Just listen.

How you'll feel: Calm; content sinking in the quick sand of some cheerless moment.

How you'll move: You won't.

Side note: St. Vincent has a great song called "Marrow." And one of my most favorite YouTube music-related videos is Bon Iver accompanying Lykke Li while she sings "Dance, Dance, Dance" in the park.

ECLIPSE WEEK! Trance tamborine hypnosis - "How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep?" Bombay Bicycle Club

"How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep?" Bombay Bicycle Club

This song sends me into a mindless rhythmic trance in which I feel nothing. The repetitive, "Can you wake me up?" makes me feel like a blissful indie cult member.

How you'll move: Side to side rocking with silent head bobbing.

When to play it: While writing your novel; contemplating the meaning of your life in your bed; painting; anytime you want to become an empty jellyfish in a sea of cyclical beats.

Side note: This is a track from The Twilight Saga: Eclipse movie soundtrack which is now available on iTunes. About the band: from London, debut album out one year ago in July 2009, second album coming out July 2010. To be honest, I don't want to taint this song by listening to any others!

ECLIPSE WEEK! Black heart ritual rock - "Rolling In On A Burning Tire" The Dead Weather

"Rolling In On A Burning Tire" The Dead Weather

This song makes me feel like I'm slow motion walking in a scene from The Craft. That insanely creepy scream from the guitar drives me wild (listen 0:11 mins and 3:33 mins).

How you'll move: Shoe gazing suicidal head bob; maybe a toe tap.

When to play it: Depressed moments in bed on a dark gloomy Saturday afternoon; on the subway from NYC to Jersey City at 1AM while actually envisioning yourself in The Craft (I'm just saying).

Side note: This is a track from The Twilight Saga: Eclipse movie soundtrack which is now available on iTunes. The Dead Weather is another Jack White brain child composed of White, Alison Mosshart (of The Kills and Discount), Dean Fertita (of Queens of the Stone Age), and Jack Lawrence (of The Raconteurs and The Greenhornes). Another good Dead Weather song: "I Cut Like a Buffalo." Jack White... Midas touch?

Raise it up fill it up, your spirits - "Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)" Florence & The Machine

"Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)" Florence & The Machine

This song makes me feel like starting off with a walk, trodding into a jog, busting into a run, ripping off my homely secretary blouse to reveal my Superwoman spandex, and flying freely into a powerful state of superhuman being.

How you'll move: Spastic shaking and hair pulling combined with ritualistic arm raising in sync with the lyrics "raise it up!"

When to play it: Solitary moments when you're feeling good and meaty, maybe intently cleaning your room; jogging.

Side note: Ok, so Wikipedia describes Florence & The Machine as a combination of "rock and soul," and you know what, I agree! This is some soulful powerful mind jarring shit from a young UK redhead (yes, she is a psuedo one-woman band). Also, she's 28. Her first full album, "Lungs," is on iTunes. Other good tracks: "Dog Days Are Over" and the familiar "Kiss with A Fist."

Blues rock funk heartbreak gone right - "Tighten Up" The Black Keys

"Tighten Up" The Black Keys

So many things to say here. This is how you make blues rock funky and relatable and enjoyable and edible.

The breakdown at 3:00 mins makes my friend Raf wiggle his body all around.

How you'll feel: Filled up. I feel this song in my soul. That's right, I said it.

When to play it: Living room dance party with your friends while drinking beers; air guitar contest; if you feel like tapping your food and bobbing your head with your eyes closed like you've never tapped and bobbed sightless before.

Side note: Did you see that thing I wrote about my soul? This is from the latest Black Key's album which rocks in general (pictured here). Also, there are 2 videos out there - the official one that I've posted here and another one with a puppet TRex, and honestly, both of these videos ruin the song for a first listen, because they're distracting from the music. I highly recommend that you first try to just LISTEN and NOT watch the video. Then watch the video; it's really cute.

"Living just to keep going, going just to be sane," sing it man, sing it.

Guilty dirty pop pleasure (who says "sexting" is a bad idea?) - "Dirty Picture" Taio Cruz & Ke$ha

"Dirty Picture" Taio Cruz feat Ke$ha

I told you this blog was about whatever moved me at the moment - good, bad, ugly, or... trashy.

When to play it: After you've had one too many and want to grind on girls/boys; Michael's birthday party this Saturday (toward the end of the party mix, like I said, "one too many"); when you need the courage to take an iPhone shot of your cleavage and drunkenly send it to your coworker.

Side note: This song kicks in at 1:00 min with some Tiesto's red headed stepchild, Ke$ha becomes my idol at 1:30 min, this random guy named Taio looks smokin' at 2:01. BAM. SUMMERTIME.

Deep dark child rock - "Crying Lightning" Arctic Monkeys

"Crying Lightning" Arctic Monkeys

This sounds like the rock song that indie vampires would sing to me before they turned me. These English child rockers wail in my brain!

What you'll feel: Impending rock doom of those indie rock vampires I mentioned.

When to play it: When you want to feel satisfied in one song; driving in the car to a determined location without pressure of being on time.

Side note: I saw/heard them play last year at All Points West. They were playing it in prep for the release of their recent album, Humbug (pictured here).

Lo fi funk shuffle - "Jealous of Roses" Bibio

"Jealous of Roses" Bibio

This song makes you do the shoulder snake.

What you'll feel: Funky oceanic brain waves. Funny enough, the video has image of waterfalls and rivers. No thoughts on this video.

When to play it: Any small house party; any exclusive moment to get down with yourself.

Side note: Bibio is a British music producer; this song is from his 2009 album (pictured here). Another good catch from this album: "Lovers' Carvings" - but give it time to warm up. You can get it on iTunes.
